Hello, In the chain of bars/clubs I work for, most of us use Traktor. But there are a few people using Virtual DJ. I know that Virtual DJ is only free for home use: if you're getting paid to play in bars and clubs, you need to buy a licence. And the licences really aren't cheap: they're $299. They offer cheaper licences that are locked to specific controllers, but those licences also don't allow paid use and they're still $99 - $199.

This is a lot more expensive than Traktor ($99 for base software, $99 upgrade to add DVS) or Serato ($129 for base software, $99 upgrade to add DVS). My question for Virtual DJ users is this: what made you choose Virtual DJ over 'the big kings' Traktor and Serato? Did you just buy it because you'd used the free version before 'going pro' and didn't want to learn new software, or was there another reason?

In my opinion, it's just better software. I know this isn't the popular opinion but I really don't need a thousand ways to chop and FX my music to death so half of traktor's appeal is gone. Serato is pretty decent but I can't justify a $400 soundcard when I already have a perfectly working one right now. VDJ isn't proprietary to any hardware, isn't bloated with crap I don't need, and has hands down the best library filtering and management system out there. I don't think any of the other options (and I've tried them all, not just the big 2-3) even come close. None of them have a competitor to vdjscript either which means writing more complex mappings requires you to use something as a middleware. It consumes fewer resources and lets me focus on the music, which is all I want.

It supports HID which is more accurate than timecode and MIDI combined. It works with pretty much any timecode records too if you want to go that route. It streams to shoutcast built into the software (in traktor I have to use third party software and if you've ever tired to use two applications on one soundcard in windows you know it's a nightmare). The database is easily understood and when I moved things around a few times I was easily able to update all the locations in the db file and not have to re-scan everything. The auto-gain feature is really nice. I know how to gain appropriately but it's just so much nicer to be able to use every single fader as the exact same volume scale without having to remember which one is loud and which one is quiet, and not have to remember to reset your gain every track.

The waveforms. The waveforms are by far the most useful waveforms of any of hte options out there, in my opinion. You can really truly see the exact moment each kick is happening and it makes things easy to line up if you get into a stick situation and need to repair a trainwreck fast.

Obviously don't rely on them for all your mixes but it's a great feature to have overlapping waveforms like that. It's a shame that VDJ has such a bad stigma, because it really is a pretty featured bit of software. Most of the mobile DJs I know have been using it for years with no issue (and prefer it, for many of the reasons you've mentioned, especially the library management), and whenever I've used it, I've had no complaints about it. I've also used pretty much every DJ program out there (I was a Torq user for the longest time, even), and VDJ is in a weird position where it really can hold it's own against Serato and Traktor, but the lack of marketing and awareness really killed their ability to gain a meaningful hold of the market share. I think all of the DJs I know that use VDJ heard about it only from other DJs they know, and were mostly sold on the library stuff. The two big benefits to having Virtual DJ (one of which I've found an alternative for) are its Automix features, and its multi-computer update ease.

Especially for mobile gigs where you've got a cocktail and dinner hour, being able to throw a playlist on and have it smartly blend songs on its own with some degree of variables to tweak (such as Automix point, blend time, etc.) This is in comparison to Serato where its Automix had no blending what so ever, and plays the complete Tops and Tails of the tracks. (Worth mentioning that now I run Djay Pro on a tablet now in lieu of VDJ, as I've got an equivalent Automix, and now don't have to resort to mouse clicking should my main rig go down.) The multi computer database ease is the main draw for what I like to use it for though.

I run a mobile DJ company, and we have a rotating collection of 12 laptops (6 mains and 6 backups) shared between 15 DJs. With how the file database is organized, I'm able to relatively easily acquire new music and requests, update our playlists, and update all hard drives incrementally every week. The process is the same, whether I'm adding just one new track, or 50 new tracks.
